Totman Building prior to our renovation

The new Kinesiology Laboratory provides urgently needed wet labs to accommodate growing academic programs. This project was a major initiative that grew out of our 2014 Master Plan Study for the School of Public Health and Health Sciences (SPHHS) at University of Massachusetts Amherst, which proposed a renovated Totman building as the expanded home for the Kinesiology Department.

This multi-phased project required creative conversion of a 4,400 sf space in the Totman Physical Education Building that was originally used as a women’s locker room and Rowing Club workout space. The laboratory serves three faculty researchers studying muscle biology. Designed for maximum flexibility, the open plan lab features movable casework with overhead carriers; fixed equipment and utilities are located on the perimeter, with separate cold, equipment, and microscope rooms.
