Halligan Hall prior to renovation

Halligan Hall is the new home of the consolidated Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) department of Tufts School of Engineering. The renewed facility will bring together faculty and research from other campus buildings and provide a vibrant and welcoming home for the department that values a tradition of community, inside and out.

Anticipating growth in research, students and faculty, programming and space use flexibility are central to our approach. An open lab configuration includes core support labs for shared uses and equipment. Transparency into the labs puts research and student engagement activities on display. ECE anticipates utilizing research spaces with a range of functions in the building: wet and dry labs, core labs, possibly including 3D printing, welding and fabrication, lasers, multimedia, and biosafety level one (BSL1). Other program components include classrooms, faculty offices, graduate student write-up areas, and a range of collaboration and meeting spaces. The total scope of the renovation is 35,000 sf.

Advancing campus decarbonization goals, our renovation incorporates state-of-the-art, energy-efficient infrastructure systems and building envelope improvements. Ventilation, heating and cooling, and daylighting improvements address human comfort and create invigorating environments for research. The project is tracking a November 2023 completion.
